ASSESSMENT :
Children are first assessed to ascertain if & to what extent they are mentally handicapped before placement in the various services offered by MENTAID.
COUNSELLING :
Parent to Parent Counselling : The facts of mental handicap are given and moral support is extended to families.
Counselling for students : To build their self confidence and seek help with problems.
HOME MANAGEMENT :
Principle : Early intervention brings maximum results.
Available for the severely handicapped and the very young.
Special Education – Activities of Daily Living
SPECIAL SCHOOL UNIT 3-13 years
Principle : Each child is unique and can progress.
Individual programmes for each child focus on motor, social, perceptual, language and communication , self help and number skills.
SKILLS UNIT -13 years and above
Principle : education for life.
Individual programmes include functional academics, P.E. and yoga , social, prevocational and independent living skills, basic computers, development of self esteem and co-curricular activities like music, dance, drama, art and craft, which broaden their experience.
Vocational Training – Pounding Turmeric
VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE (VTC) 18 years and above
Principle : Every one has a right to work.
At the Mentaid Centre , trainees from the Mentaid Centre work with dignity under good and fair working conditions. Their wages are based on productivity.
Leisure Club
LEISURE CLUB. For older children and young adults.
Principle : Leisure provides entertainment necessary for social development. Young people from the community organize suitable leisure activities that can be pursued in an atmosphere of fun and where choices can be made in an integrated setting.
NEWSLETTER
Principle: Disseminating information.
The quarterly issues provide a platform for sharing of achievements and experiences. Information on all aspects of mental handicap are disseminated.
PUBLIC AWARENESS
Principle : Educating the masses.
Organising and participating in seminars, workshops and exhibitions. Also through pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, T.V. and radio.
