More than 100 people gathered to witness a remarkable variety show put up by MENTAID to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March 2015, at Deshapriya Park, Kolkata, from 4.30 – 6p.m.
The Chief Guest on the occasion was the Mayor-in-Council, Debasish Kumar who extended full support for us to organise the event in a public place. Friends from other organisations we network with were present as were the parents, staff, well wishers and people from the locality.
The parents sang the welcome invocation which was followed by a short welcome by the Chairperson and felicitation of special guests.
The programme included dances by children with Down Syndrome – singly by a very talented young lady, two together as “bondhu” or buddies and in a group, the littlest ones. The musical performances included one remarkable young man on the synthesizer and another on the mouth organ. The fancy dress show was lively with background music to match the person who was among other characters, showcasing either being Swami Vivekananda, a purohit, a tourist, a fairy or a Rajasthani dancer.
A couple of young adults with Down Syndrome expressed their desire to have friends when given the opportunity to speak on the mike.
A huge canvas gave the opportunity for free expression through paint and drew a lot of attention.
The aim of creating public interest was achieved in a fun interactive manner and at the end of the performance, refreshments were given to all the children.
